What is Venlafaxine HCl?

Venlafaxine is used to treat depression. Venlafaxine extended-release (long-acting) capsules are also used to treat generalized anxiety disorder (excessive worrying that is difficult to control), search social anxiety disorder (extreme fear of interacting with others or performing in front of others that interferes with normal life), and panic disorder (sudden, unexpected attacks of extreme fear and worry about these attacks). Venlafaxine is in a class of medications called selective serotonin and norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors (SNRIs).

How does Venlafaxine HCl work?

Venlafaxine works by increasing the amounts of serotonin and norepinephrine, ampoule natural substances in the brain that help maintain mental balance.

Who should not use Venlafaxine HCL?

Your prescriber may only prescribe this medicine with special care or may not prescribe it at all if you:

  • are allergic or sensitive to or have had a reaction to any of the ingredients in the medicine
  • are having electroconvulsive therapy
  • are taking monoamine oxidase inhibitors or have taken them within the last two weeks
  • have blood problems or are prone to bleeding
  • have epilepsy
  • have had a recent heart attack
  • have heart problems or have risk factors for certain types of heart problems
  • have high blood pressure
  • have kidney problems
  • have liver problems
  • have narrow angle glaucoma
  • have or have had mania
  • have or have had seizures
  • have raised pressure in the eye
How should I use Venlafaxine HCl?

Venlafaxine comes as a tablet or extended-release capsule to take by mouth. The tablet is usually taken two or three times a day with food. The extended-release capsule is usually taken once daily in the morning or evening with food. Take venlafaxine at around the same time(s) every day. Follow the directions on your prescription label carefully, and ask your doctor or pharmacist to explain any part you do not understand. Take venlafaxine exactly as directed. Do not take more or less of it or take it more often or for a longer period of time than prescribed by your doctor.

Swallow the extended-release capsule whole; do not split, chew or crush it, or place it in water. If you cannot swallow the extended-release capsule, you may carefully open the capsule and sprinkle the entire contents on a spoonful of applesauce. Swallow (without chewing) this mixture immediately after preparation and then drink a glass of water to make sure that you have swallowed all of the medication.

What happens if I overdose?

In case of overdose, call your local poison control center at 1-800-222-1222. If the victim has collapsed or is not breathing, call local emergency services at 911.

Symptoms of overdose may include:

  • dizziness
  • nausea
  • vomiting
  • burning, tingling, or numbness of the hands and feet
  • increased size of the pupil (black center of the eye)
  • muscle pain
  • sleepiness
  • seizures
  • fast, slow, or irregular heartbeat
  • coma (loss of consciousness for a period of time)
What are the possible side effects of Venlafaxine HCl?

Very common: More than 10% of people who take Venlafaxine HCl

  • constipation
  • dizziness
  • dry mouth
  • erectile or ejaculation problems
  • headaches
  • nausea
  • sleepiness
  • sweating including night sweats
What other drugs will affect Venlafaxine HCl?

The following medicines may interact with Venlafaxine HCl:

  • cimetidine
  • clozapine
  • desipramine
  • erythromycin
  • haloperidol
  • imipramine
  • indinavir
  • ketoconazole
  • lithium
  • phentermine
  • warfarin
Storage

Keep Venlafaxine HCl in the container it came in, tightly closed, and out of reach of children. Store it at room temperature and away from excess heat and moisture (not in the bathroom). Throw away any medication that is outdated or no longer needed.
