What is Moxifloxacin HCL?

Moxifloxacin Hydrochloride is an antibiotic used to treat adults with bacterial infections of the lungs, seek sinuses, pills skin, and abdominal cavity. It belongs to a family of quinolone antibiotics that includes ciprofloxacin, ofloxacin, and levofloxacin. It is a broad spectrum antibiotics, meaning that it is effective against a wide range of different types of bacteria.

Uses

Moxifloxacin is an effective antibiotic against many strains of both gram negative and gram positive bacteria.

The indications for moxifloxacin include:

  • Acute bacterial sinusitis
  • Acute exacerbation of chronic bronchitis
  • Complicated (deep infections involving tissue and skin) and uncomplicated (superficial infections such as cellulitis, impetigo and folliculitis) skin infections
  • Complicated intra-abdominal infections including abcesses
How Moxifloxacin Hydrochloride is Taken

Moxifloxacin comes in 400 milligram tablets taken by mouth. The drug can also be administered in intravenous (IV) form (the IV solution contains 400 mg of moxifloxacin). Moxifloxacin hydrochloride is also manufactured as a 0.5% opthalmic solution.

The oral form of moxfloxacin is taken once a day with or without food and with plenty of fluids. The intravenous dosing is also once a day.

How It Works

Moxifloxacin hydrochloride is a quinolone antibiotic. It inhibits the action of enzymes called topoisomerase II (DNA-gyrase) and topoisomerase IV. These enzymes are found within bacterial cells and work to transcribe and repair the deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) that the bacteria use in order to multiply. When these enzymes are not allowed to function properly, the bacteria will die. Moxifloxacin can kill many types of bacteria including some that can cause pneumonia, bronchitis, and sinusitis.

How the body affects moxifloxacin hydrochloride

The drug is well absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract. Bioavailability is approximately 90% The drug’s half life is 12 hours and steady-state concentration is reached after three days at the 400 mg dose. Approximately 45% of the drug is excreted unchanged in the urine and feces. The dose does not need to be adjusted in the elderly or in people with decreased kidney function.

Benefits

The benefits of moxifloxacin include once/daily dosing and an easy adjustment from IV dosing to oral dosing. It has been shown to be an effective therapy for community-aquired pneumonia, exacerbation of acute bronchitis and sinusitits.
