What is Bezafibrate?

Bezafibrate (marketed as Bezalip and various other brand names) is a fibrate drug used for the treatment of hyperlipidaemia. It helps lower cholesterol and triglycerides in the blood.

Bezafibrate decreases low density lipoproteins and increases high density lipoproteins.

What is the mechanism of action?

Bezafibrate is a fibrate drug. The primary mode of action of fibrates is via activation of the nuclear transcription factor PPARalpha, predominantly expressed in tissues that metabolise fatty acids, such as the liver, kidney, heart and muscle. Fibrates may also interact with other PPAR receptors to varying degrees. On activation by binding of the fibrate, PPARalpha binds as heterodimers with RXR, which subsequently recognizes and binds to specific PPAR alpha response elements leading to modulation of expression of the target genes.

How to dose Bezafibrate?

Adult dosage: take 200 mg every 8 hours with or after food.

Side effects of Bezafibrate may include the following:

• Decreased appetite (anorexia)
• Dizziness
• Headache
• Feeling bloated (stomach distension)
• Feeling sick (nausea)
• Insomnia (unable to sleep)
• Blocked bile flow (cholestasis)
• Itching
• Rash Red
• Patches of skin with severe itching (hives)
• Sensitivity to light or to sun beds
• Muscular weakness
• Muscle cramps
• Muscle pain (myalgia)
• Kidney failure
