What is Azilsartan Medoxomil?

Azilsartan medoxomil is in a group of drugs called angiotensin II receptor antagonists. Azilsartan medoxomil keeps blood vessels from narrowing, which lowers blood pressure and improves blood flow. Azilsartan medoxomil is used to treat high blood pressure (hypertension). It is sometimes given together with other blood pressure medications.Its empirical formula is C30H23KN4O8.

Azilsartan kamedoxomil is a white to nearly white powder with a molecular weight of 606.62. It is practically insoluble in water and freely soluble in methanol.

Mechanism of Action

Azilsartan kamedoxomil, a prodrug, is hydrolyzed to azilsartan in the gastrointestinal tract during absorption. Azilsartan is a selective AT1 subtype angiotensin II receptor antagonist. Angiotensin II is formed from angiotensin I in a reaction catalyzed by angiotensin-converting enzymes (ACE, kinase II). Angiotensin II is the principal pressor agent of the renin-angiotensin system, with effects that include vasoconstriction, stimulation of synthesis and release of aldosterone, cardiac stimulation, and renal reabsorption of sodium. Azilsartan blocks the vasoconstrictor and aldosterone-secreting effects of angiotensin II by selectively blocking the binding of angiotensin II to the AT1 receptor in many tissues, such as vascular smooth muscle and the adrenal gland. Its action is, therefore, independent of the pathway for angiotensin II synthesis.

Precautions Before Using Azilsartan Medoxomil

Caution should be exercised in patients with history of blood vessel problems, poor blood circulation, heart, liver, or kidney disease, sugar, stroke, heart attack, dehydration, angioedema, low blood volume, any allergy, who are taking other medications, during pregnancy and breastfeeding.

• It may cause dizziness, do not drive a car or operate machinery and get up slowly from bed while taking this medication.
• Monitor blood pressure, blood electrolyte levels, and heart or kidney function regularly while taking this medication.

Azilsartan Medoxomil side effects

• Cardiovascular side effects have included hypotension/orthostatic hypotension (0.4%).
• Gastrointestinal side effects have included diarrhea (up to 2%) and nausea.
• Hematologic side effects have included low hemoglobin, hematocrit, and RBC counts in less than 0.5% of patients. Low and high markedly abnormal platelet and WBC counts were observed in less than 0.1% of patients.
• Musculoskeletal side effects have included muscle spasm.
• Nervous system side effects have included dizziness, postural dizziness, asthenia, and fatigue.
• Renal side effects have included small reversible increases in serum creatinine in patients receiving 80 mg of azilsartan and may be larger when coadministered with chlorthalidone or hydrochlorothiazide.
• Respiratory side effects have included cough.

Azilsartan Medoxomil Overdose

If overdose is suspected, contact a poison control center or emergency room immediately.

Store in the original container from your pharmacist or doctor at room temperature away from light and moisture. Do not put this medication into a different container. Do not store in the bathroom.
