Vinorelbine tartrate stops cell division, resulting in cell death.

What is Vinorelbine tartrate used for?

It is used to treat lung cancer and breast cancers. Vinorelbine also is used to treat other cancers such as breast cancer, ovarian cancer, and Hodgkin’s disease. Talk to your doctor about the possible risks of using this drug for your condition.

How should I take Vinorelbine tartrate?

Take this drug exactly as directed by your doctor. If you do not understand these instructions, ask your doctor or to explain them to you. This drug can be given at different strengths depending on the type of cancer being treated. Dosage may vary depending on your body weight and the type of cancer being treated.

What should I tell my doctor before taking Vinorelbine tartrate?

Before taking this drug, tell your doctor:

• If you are trying to become pregnant, are pregnant, or breastfeeding. This drug may cause birth defects if either the male or female is taking it at the time of conception or during pregnancy. Men and women who are taking this drug need to use some kind of birth control. However, do not use oral contraceptives (¡°the pill¡±) without checking with your doctor.
• If you think you may want to have children in the future. Many hemotherapy drugs can cause sterility.
• If you have any of the following medical problems: chickenpox or exposure to chickenpox, gout, heart disease, congestive heart failure, shingles, kidney stones, liver disease, or other forms of cancer.
• If you are taking any other prescription or over-the-counter drugs, including vitamins and herbals.

Precautions

Before taking vinorelbine,

• tell your doctor and pharmacist if you are allergic to vinorelbine or any other drugs;
• tell your doctor and pharmacist what prescription and nonprescription medications you are taking, especially aspirin, cisplatin (Platinol), mitomycin (Mutamycin), other cancer chemotherapeutic agents, and vitamins;
• tell your doctor if you have or have ever had liver disease;
• you should know that vinorelbine may interfere with the normal menstrual cycle (period) in women and may stop sperm production in men. However, you should not assume that you cannot get pregnant or that you cannot get someone else pregnant. Women who are pregnant or breast-feeding should tell their doctors before they begin taking this drug. You should not plan to have children while receiving chemotherapy or for a while after treatments;
• do not have any vaccinations (e.g., measles or flu shots) without talking to your doctor.

What are the side effects?

The side effects you may experience with vinorelbine therapy depend upon the dose, other types of chemotherapy also given and the disease being treated. Not all of these effects occur in all patients.

Side effects that you should report to your prescriber or health care professional as soon as possible:

More common:

• pain, tingling, or numbness in the hands and feet
• fever or chills, cough or sore throat
• constipation

Less common:

• signs of infection – fever or chills, cough, sore throat, pain or difficulty passing urine
• signs of decreased platelets or bleeding – bruising, pinpoint red spots on the skin, black, tarry stools, blood in the urine
• signs of decreased red blood cells – unusual weakness or tiredness, fainting spells, lightheadedness
• mouth sores
• hives or a rash
• pain, redness, swelling or irritation at the injection site

Warnings of taking Vinorelbine tartrate

Vinorelbine can cause a decrease in the number of blood cells in your bone marrow. Keep all appointments with your doctor and the laboratory. Your doctor will order lab tests before, during, and after your treatment to see if your blood cells are affected by this drug. Vinorelbine should be administered only into a vein. However, it may leak into surrounding tissue causing severe irritation or damage. Your doctor or will monitor your administration site for this reaction.
