What is Letrozole?

Letrozole is in a class of drugs known as aromatase inhibitors; it prevents formation of estrogen. Although estrogen is a hormone naturally produced by the body, it can stimulate and maintain the growth of certain types of cancer. Letrozole slows or stops the growth of cancer cells by decreasing the amount of estrogen produced.

What is Letrozole used for?

This medication is used to treat: advanced breast cancer in postmenopausal women with disease progression after antiestrogen therapy.

Letrozole Drug Interaction

This includes vitamins, minerals, herbal products, and drugs prescribed by other doctors. Do not start using a new medication without telling your doctor.

Precautions Before Using Letrozole

Before taking letrozole, tell your doctor if you have liver disease.You may not be able to use letrozole or you may need a dosage adjustment or special tests during treatment.

• Do not use this medication if you are pregnant. It could cause harm to the unborn baby. Use an effective form of birth control, and tell your doctor if you become pregnant during treatment.
• Use this medication exactly as it was prescribed for you. Do not use it in larger doses or for longer than recommended by your doctor.
• There may be other drugs that can affect letrozole. Tell your doctor about all the prescription and over-the-counter medications you use. This includes vitamins, minerals, herbal products, and drugs prescribed by other doctors. Do not start using a new medication without telling your doctor.
• Stop using this medication and get emergency medical help if you think you have used too much medicine, or if you have any of these signs of an allergic reaction: hives; difficulty breathing; swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat.
• Less serious side effects are more likely, and you may have none at all. Talk to your doctor about any side effect that seems unusual or is especially bothersome.

Letrozole side effects

Although side effects from letrozole are not common, they can occur. Tell your doctor if any of these symptoms are severe or do not go away:

• nausea
• vomiting
• muscle or bone pain
• fatigue
• headache
• dizziness
• muscle weakness
• swelling of the hands, feet, or lower legs
• loss of appetite
• constipation
• diarrhea
• abdominal pain
• hot flashes
• cough

If you experience any of the following symptoms, call your doctor immediately:

• chest pain
• difficulty breathing
• rash

What should you do if you miss a dose of Letrozole?

Take the missed dose as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and take the medicine at the next regularly scheduled time. Do not take extra medicine to make up the missed dose.

Overdose Letrozole

Seek emergency medical attention if you think you have used too much of this medicine.

An overdose of letrozole is not expected to produce life-threatening symptoms.

Letrozole Storage

Keep letrozole in the container it came in, tightly closed, and out of reach of children. Store it at room temperature and away from excess heat and moisture (not in the bathroom). Throw away any medication that is outdated or no longer needed. Talk to your pharmacist about the proper disposal of your medication.
