What is Ketamine HCl?

Ketamine hydrochloride (ketamine hcl) is a nonbarbiturate anesthetic chemically designated (±)-2-(o-Chlorophenyl)-2-(methylamino) cyclohexanone hydrochloride. It is formulated as a slightly acid (pH 3.5 to 5.5) sterile solution for intravenous or intramuscular injection in concentrations containing the equivalent of 50 mg ketamine base per milliliter and contains not more than 0.1 mg/mL benzethonium chloride added as a preservative.

What is the mechanism of action?

Produces rapid-acting anesthetic state with profound analgesia, discount normal pharyngeal-laryngeal reflexes, normal or slightly enhanced skeletal muscle tone, cardiovascular and respiratory stimulation, and, occasionally, transient and minimal respiratory depression.

How to dose Ketamine HCl?

Induction of Anesthesia

Adults and Children 16 yr of age and older

IV Initial: 1 to 4.5 mg/kg via slow infusion (over 60 sec); usual dose for 5- to 10-min anesthesia: 2 mg/kg. Alternatively, ailment 1 to 2 mg/kg at a rate of 0.5 mg/kg/min, augmented with diazepam IV 2 to 5 mg. Maintenance: One-half to full induction dose, repeated as needed. Alternatively, adults induced with ketamine augmented with IV diazepam may receive 0.1 to 0.5 mg/min by slow microdrip infusion, help augmented with diazepam 2 to 5 mg IV as needed. IM Initial: 6.5 to 13 mg/kg. Maintenance: One-half to full induction dose, repeated as needed.
